Helping Out - Volunteering

volunteering - mangrove restoration

Volunteering or working on a service project with the villagers is an ideal way to give something back to the communities that you visit. Some villages have a well-structured volunteer program, while others may work on a more informal basis. Activities include teaching English in high school and primary schools, mangrove conservation, or light construction projects. Projects depend on the need of the villagers and may not be available throughout the year, so always check first to avoid disappointment.

Villages in the initial stages of their community tourism and homestay development always need volunteers to pilot activities and provide feedback. Without real experience of foreign guests, providing invaluable input, community tourism development will make little progress. By staying, eating and working with locals, your financial contribution will demonstrate the economic benefit of sustainable tourism practices.

Villages will expect you to cover costs of food and accommodation as many are not in a financial position to offer free bed and board in return for your time.

Villages accepting volunteers include Muang Kluang, Ban Lion, and Ban Talae Nok.

Volunteer opportunities are also available through Naucrates, Andaman Discoveries, and the Koh Ra Ecolodge.
