Koh Kho Khao Community Action

Koh Kho Khao Community Map

More than half of Koh Kho Khao area is occupied by forestland, mainly mangrove, while the terrestrial forests are rapidly being converted for agricultural purposes. The traditional livelihood here is artisanal fishing, but recently some locals have found their jobs with resorts located on the island.

Communities here are developing many activities in conservation and tourism. To help the mangrove forests recover from the tsunami, locals helped to plant mangroves on the north and east sides of the island.

Locals are also trying to preserve their fishing techniques and pass them on to their children. A youth group formed to protect the environment has expanded form one village to all communities on the island.

Support has come from organizations such as Thailand Environment Institute and Kenan Institute Asia.
