Kamphuan Community Learning Centre and Tsunami Museum

The aim of the Kamphuan Community Learning Centre and Tsunami Museum (KCLC) is to improve community resilience to natural disasters, encourage economic growth and encourage environmental protection for the local communities.

The KCLC features a guest house located on the beautiful Kampuan River, just next to the local market. Surrounded by flowering shade trees and native plants, it is an ideal venue for group gatherings, retreats, meetings, etc. The entire house is decorated in Lana Thai style with custom teak and rattan furnishings, original art works, and local textiles and artifacts.

The KCLC offers training in computer skills, micro-enterprise development, natural resource management and community-based disaster preparedness. The fully-equipped centre offers a meeting space (indoor and outdoor), office space, Internet access, accommodation and an interactive tsunami museum available for public use (fees applicable for some facilities and services). The building and landscaping designed to serve as a model "Green Building," maximising energy efficiency.

The Kampuan Tsunami Museum

This fully interactive tsunami museum includes local survivor testimonials, informative displays about the 2004 tsunami and educational materials on disaster preparedness.

Computer and Internet Training

The KCLC has been named by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) as the 21st Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Center in Thailand and the only one of its kind in the Andaman region. As a result, KCLC enjoys support for the centers computer and internet programs from the MICT.

Microfinance Institution

One of the great successes of the Sustainable Livelihoods Program has been the initiation of 5 Village Revolving Funds that have developed into a Cooperative Credit Union. The Center will provide training on establishing a revolving fund as well as skills training in accounting and management.

Micro-Enterprise Development

Integrated Aquaculture using Muskogee Duck, Tilapia and vegetables has successfully provided alternative income ,reduced household food costs and improved local nutrition. Other micro enterprises developments include headscarf production, yellow ginger cultivation and bead jewelry making, etc.

Community Based Disaster Management

The Center offers education programs in Community-Based Disaster Management to people at the local, Provincial and National Level. These programs provide a comprehensive overview of Disaster Prevention, Mitigation and Response to natural and man-made disasters.

Mangrove Rehabilitation

The Mangrove Rehabilitation and Regeneration for Biodiversity provides an experiential education program involving the local community ecosystem stakeholders in directly gathering knowledge and experience their local natural resources. Thru surveying, identifying, propagating, planting, monitoring and managing a nearby mangrove ecosystem, members of the community take park in stewardship of our local area.


KCLC provides training in Environmental Education to local people. These low-impact educational-tours will increase participation in existing village home-stays and eco-tour programs in the area.

Solid Waste Management

To improve practices that protect health, maintains the environment and attracts tourism, the Center provides training on solid waste management and recycling.
